freestream velocity and the angle of attack were varied. The angle
of attack was varied from -15° to + 15°, at 5° increments. For each
angle of attack, the freestream velocity was varied from 20 ft/s to
45 ft/s, in 5 ft/s increments.
For each angle of attack, the freestream velocity was increased
to the desired set point. Once stabilized, the sensor was interrogated and frequency response data was captured. At the same time,
a tripod-mounted camera was used to photograph the tip deflection
of the model against a calibration sheet. The calibration sheet was
used as a "yardstick", with demarcations at every inch. Given the
distances from the camera to the wingtip and from the camera to
the calibration sheet, and a photographic measurement of every
run, the true wingtip deflection was determined.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS
The data from both the static bench test and the wind tunnel test
were analyzed. Two types of comparisons were made. The first
correlates the wing deflection with the frequency response of the
SansEC patch mounted on the upper side of the wing, and the second compared the wing deflection against the frequency response
of the SansEC patch mounted on the lower side of the wing.

STATIC BENCH TESTING
Figure 14a illustrates the variation in the left wing sensor's peak
frequency as the amount of deflection changed along the left wing
tip. As described earlier, the change in tip deflection in the static
bench test was brought about by progressively loading the wing of
the model using a Whiffle Tree configuration.
A positive linear correlation between the peak frequency of the
sensor and the tip deflection was observed. As the wing was loaded
from 0 kg to approximately 5.5 kg, the tip deflection increased
from 0 to just under 4.5″. At the same time, the peak frequency
was seen to increase from 8.967 MHz to 9.0 MHz. While this frequency shift is small, it is consistently detectable by the frequency
analyzer.
Figure 14b illustrates the variation in the right wing sensor's
peak frequency response as the amount of deflection changed
along the right wing tip. A negative linear correlation was observed
