Lorenzo: To conclude, let's talk about the present: what are
you working on now?
Hugh: We have a substantial program, in collaboration with
Professor Mike Inggs and his colleagues at the University of
Cape Town in South Africa, to measure and analyze the bistatic
radar signatures of sea clutter and maritime targets as a function of bistatic geometry, frequency, and polarization. This
has been funded by several organizations including the IET A
F Harvey Research Prize, the Royal Academy of Engineering,
ONR(Global) and FFI (Norway) and is the culmination of many
years of work. We have also measured the micro-Doppler signatures of human targets, wind turbines, and drones and birds.
Another project aims to use bistatic techniques in ground penetrating radar for landmine detection, funded by the charity Find A
Better Way (FABW).
We also have several activities in cognitive radar, passive radar, passive radar imaging, target recognition in high-resolution
SAR imagery, and intelligent adaptive underwater sonar networks.

Lorenzo: What's your favorite radar book?
Hugh: I've built up quite a large collection of radar books over the
years, including a complete original set of the MIT Radiation Lab
Series. I also particularly like Woodward's Probability and Information Theory, with Applications to Radar because of its timeless
and essential clarity, and Willis's Bistatic Radar.

Lorenzo: And what about the future? Where do you see
yourself working or spending time?
Hugh: We have a lot more to do in our program of work to measure bistatic clutter and target signatures, so that will keep us pretty
busy for severatl more years, I'm sure. I enjoy giving lectures and
tutorials all over the world, so I hope I can continue to do that for
the foreseeable future.
Finally, I feel so privileged to have worked with and to have
learned from so many outstanding radar engineers from all over the
world, and to have made so many close friends.

Lorenzo: How "painful" was it to rewrite Stimson's book?
Hugh: I wouldn't describe the Stimson book as painful - though it
certainly took a lot of work. The challenge was to bring the material
