speed software radios. Although a typical transmit channel with
a few hundred watts of power is still several times the cost of a
receive channel, transmit elements counts on the order of hundreds
are possible by using modern digital wave form generator chips
and single-transistor pair power amplifier pallets.
Some future experimental work with planar arrays includes
verifying the optimal aspect ratio (i.e., broadside dimension versus
end-fire dimension) for a planar array. Square arrays would allow
for larger azimuthal operating ranges (including 360° operation),
whereas rectangular-shaped arrays would allow one to reduce the
number of elements with a corresponding decrease in the operating
azimuth range. Work also could be performed to prove the operation
of the planar transmit array, when operating at low elevation angle
and over a wide carrier frequency range. A procedure that accounts
for coupling effects was presented here, and some calculations were
performed to illustrate the viability of the approach. In the way of
future work, a small 8 × 8 transmit array demonstration testbed is
currently being built by the author, and results will be reported in
a later publication. Of key interest is the transmit efficiency of the
array over all steer angles and carrier frequencies and whether sufficient transmit illumination can be supplied to targets to maintain
the required probability of detection for small targets of interest.
