A method for the collection of appropriate environmental and system specification data and their application to the assessment of an
OTHR receive and processing system has been described and an
example provided. The processing steps on the input HF spectral
data include the action of RF components, digital components (e.g.
ADC), and basic signal processing algorithms. In particular, the
propagation of external to internal noise ratio and nonlinear product to external noise ratio are independently calculated to quantify
system imposed degradations in system performance.
The model allows dominant degradation effects to be identified over synoptic time scales, providing guidance to necessary
improvements in receiver chain design to meet mission goals.
The model has approximations in its description of the behavior of peak ADC spur levels and radar signal processing that might
be overcome with increased sophistication in these areas, including
running all spurs through actual radar processing. Beamforming
however would require synoptic wideband data collection over entire OTHR arrays which, while representing a very large amount of
data, would permit noise directionality and the behavior of spurs under both adaptive and non-adaptive beamforming to be explored.
