Weather Radar: Operation and Phenomenology

Jenny L. Reed is a senior research engineer in the Sensors
and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory at the Georgia
Tech Research Institute (GTRI),
where she has been employed
since 2008. She received her
B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic
University in 2006 and her M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees from the
Georgia Institute of Technology
in 2007 and 2016, respectively.
The focus of her research is radar signal processing with emphasis on modeling, simulation, and
algorithm development for weather radars; airborne moving target
indication radars; surface moving target indication radars; and
electronic protection applications.
Aaron D. Lanterman is an associate professor in the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, which he joined in 2001.
In 2004, he was chosen to hold
the Demetrius T. Paris Professorship, a special position for the
development of young faculty.
He finished a triple major consisting of a B.A. degree in music,
B.S. degree in computer science,
and B.S. degree in electrical engineering at Washington University
in St. Louis in 1993. He stayed on

for graduate school, receiving an M.S. degree (1995) and a D.Sc.
degree (1998) in electrical engineering. His graduate work focused
on target recognition for infrared imagery as part of the U.S. Army
Center for Imaging Science. After graduation, he joined the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, where he managed a project on radar systems exploiting illuminators of opportunity. His other research interests include
target tracking, image reconstruction, and music synthesis. He received the Richard M. Bass (2006) and W. Marshall Leach Jr. (2015)
Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Teacher Awards and was a 2009 Hesburgh Teaching Fellow. He has served as associate editor for radar
for the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems.
John Trostel is a principal research scientist and director of
the Severe Storms Research Center at GTRI. His fields of specialization include the meteorology
of severe storms, development of
data acquisition and analysis systems, effects of meteorological
phenomena on millimeter wave
(MMW) propagation and backscatter, and general physics and
meteorological expertise. He was
part of a GTRI team tasked to
support the Federal Aviation Administration in the development of a MPAR system and was involved in investigations of MMW backscatter characteristics of
snow-covered ground, atmospheric acoustics, and underwater sonar
development. He is an active member of the American Meteorological Society, National Weather Association, American Geophysical
Union, and the American Physical Society. Trostel received his B.S.
degree in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University in 1978
and his M.S. degree in physics from Clemson University in 1983.
