Avionics. Avionics are the electronic systems used in aircraft
and artificial satellites, etc. Avionic systems include communications, navigation, display and management of multiple
systems, and hundreds of other systems that are fitted on the
aircraft to perform individual functions.
According to the Aviation Safety Network [6], a total of 19,697
aircraft accidents have been reported from 1919 till 5 October,
2015, out of which 946 are criminal occurrences, 555 are due
to unknown reasons, and 1,066 have been due to hijackings (including unsuccessful attempts) [7]. The accidents have taken
place for various reasons and have occurred during one of the
five phases that include the take-off phase, initial climb flight
phase, en-route flight phase, approach flight phase, and landing
flight phase. Although the number of accidents per year in the
recent past have decreased, the number of accidents in the enroute phase have increased compared to accidents occurring in
other phases of flight. The number of accidents that took place in
the ten-year period between 2005 and 2014 in these five phases
are tabulated below in Table 1.
En route. On or along the way or in transit. However, in this
article "en route" means that the aircraft is on passage from
one place to the other whilst airborne.
Flight Plan. Documents filed by a pilot or flight dispatcher
with the local Civil Aviation Authority prior to departure of the
flight which indicate the plane's planned route or flight path
etc. Flight plan format is specified in the ICAO Doc. 4444 [5].
Incident (noun). An occurrence, other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft which affects or
could have affected the safety of the operation in question.
