about their experience during the Planetary
Defense Team Project, including any challenges affecting their teams, what changes
and strategies were implemented to overcome the challenges, what worked well,
what worked poorly, and how the team
members received these changes. The team
leads were also asked to rate a range of
general challenges based on their difficulties; Figure 9 shows the rating outcome of
the general challenges. These range from
arranging team meetings to meeting deadlines, communications, team building, and
producing deliverables. Sixty five percent
of the team leads submitted their responses
to the questionnaire and indicated that they
all had challenges within their teams.
The questionnaire results show that
more than half of the team leads found it
difficult to allocate time to work on the
deliverables. The main challenge was getting team members to complete their tasks
well before the deadlines as all members
had other commitments for other SSP activities during the program. They were so
time constrained that most members had
little free time and had to do multiple tasks
at the same time. That is why it was necessary to implement internal deadlines and
emphasize them.
Although half the leads found that
team building was difficult, most of the
leads concluded that communication within their team was between easy and average difficulty. Also, a third of the leads
found it easy to arrange meetings, but most
of them concluded that meeting deadlines
were not easy, accomplishing deliverables

and Figure 7 shows some screenshots of the comet trajectory intersecting with Earth orbit, and laser beams interacting with the
comet, before and after perihelion. Simulations and calculations
of a comet impact were also undertaken based on previously work
done [25]. Assuming an initial comet size and relative velocity
shown in Figure 4, a comet with uniform density of 1,000 kg/m3
and an impact angle of 45 degrees, colliding with sedimentary rock
would produce a crater 6.54 km in diameter and 521 m in depth.
The impact velocity would be 27.1 km/s and the impact energy
would be 2.4 × 1,019 J (see Figure 8).

CHALLENGES, RISKS, AND SOLUTIONS
After ISU-SSP15, an online project management questionnaire was
created and sent out to the leads of the 17 subteams to get feedback
