ew instruments and measurement methods have always been
crucial in the aerospace sector. The topic is of great interest
when considering investments in the aerospace sector and the
creation of industrial districts for aerospace.

AN INTERNATIONAL MEETING PLACE
To date, apart from industry conferences where there are specific
issues related to the field of metrological interest, there has been no
dedicated conference series putting together experts in aerospace
metrology. In this framework the fourth edition of the IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace,
www.metroaerospace.org), was proposed as an international meeting place in the world of research in the field of metrology for
aerospace involving national and international institutions and
academia in a discussion on the state-of-the-art concerning issues
that require a joint approach by experts of measurement instrumentation and industrial testing, typically professional engineers, and
experts in innovation metrology, typically academics.

SPONSORS AND ORGANIZERS
MetroAeroSpace was technical co-sponsored by Aerospace and
Electronic Systems Society and IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, financial sponsored by AESS. The workshop was
held in Padua, Italy, on June 21-23, 2017. Padua is one of the oldest
cities in Italy. The Botanic Garden of Padua, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, is the oldest Botanic Garden in the world, founded
in 1545, and has collected numerous exotic and local species in the
same location continuously through the centuries. With one of the
oldest universities in the world officially founded on 1222, Padua
was always an intellectual and artistic centre, which brought many
art treasures to the city and made it a hotbed of revolutionary ideas.
MetroAeroSpace 2017 was jointly organized by Pasquale Daponte, University of Sannio, Italy, and Robert Rassa, Raytheon,
US, acting as executive co-chairs. Technical Program Chairs
were Stephen Dyer, Kansas State University, US, and Stefano
Debei, University of Padua, while Marco Pertile, University of
Padua and Cosimo Stallo, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy, served as a Publicity Chair and Treasury Chair, respectively.

Honorary Chair was Marina Ruggieri, University of Rome "Tor
Vergata", Italy.
After the remarkable success of the first three IEEE International Workshops on Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace),
each attracting more than one hundred researchers, it was deemed
appropriate to promote a fourth edition of this event, which aimed
to strengthen and support partnerships among researchers working
on the development of instrumentation and measurement methods
for the aerospace industry.
The fourth edition of the Workshop saw the presence of the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency, and the National
Institute of Metrological Research. A special session dedicated to
Instruments and Technology for Space Exploration was organized,
too (Figure 1)
The event has received the support of many public institutions and private companies, listed on the web site http://www.
metroaerospace.org/index.php/sponsorship/institutional-patronage
It should be noted that the Italian Army, Navy, Air Force and
Carabinieri supported the workshop with several activities.
A parallel event "Military Metrology for AeroSpace" at the 4rd
IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for AeroSpace was
held at Palazzo Zacco "Circolo Unificato dell'Esercito", Padua,
June 21st, organized by the AFCEA Chapter of Naples, more information are available at; http://www.metroaerospace.org/military/

TECHNICAL PROGRAM
The technical program of the 4th IEEE International Workshop
on Metrology for AeroSpace was particularly difficult to arrange
since we received 135 abstracts from all over the world. Due
to high demand, only 114 papers could be selected after competitive review. Authors from 22 countries attended the Workshop. All papers submitted to the Workshop that are accepted in
a peer-reviewed process are made globally accessible via IEEE
Xplore®.
This Workshop added a significant number of Special Sessions. This was an improvement over previous workshops because
there are so many application fields in the metrology for aerospace
that a single track could have been too much dispersive. In addition, in spite of a centralized research address definition, a sponta-
