Front Cover Inset: The upper panel illustrates the fact that energy radiated by HF surface wave radars is not confined to the surface. At ranges below about 200 km, sea clutter obtained via the surface wave propagation mode is clearly visible in this rangeDoppler map, but at longer ranges, other modes provide the dominant contributions. From 200 to 400 km, clutter is observed
from ionospheric plasma irregularities and meteor trails, illuminated by the line-of-sight space wave mode. At 600 km a single
trace echo can be seen; this is the echo from a meteor trail illuminated by the descending radar signal after its reflection from the
ionosphere. Beyond 1000 km, the echoes are sea clutter observed via skywave.
The lower panel shows typical HF surface wave radar output; here attention is confined to the first 200 km in range. In addition
to the Bragg peaks and a ship echo, the signature of a transponder fitted to a buoy (nested insert) can be seen. There are many
highly informative uses of floating HF transponders, the most common of which is to serve as a radar cross section calibration
device (RCD). These two range-Doppler maps were recorded on Australian HFSWR systems in 1995 and 1997 respectively.
