term spectrum monitoring. We apply unsupervised ML analysis
on the basis of clustering for the recognition and identification of
sources of electromagnetic (EM) emissions deteriorating the performance of a mobile BS on the data obtained from a long-term
spectrum monitoring process. It is shown that by the application of
a proper RF data analytic approach, the detection and identification
of a specific type of interference in the uplink (UL) channel in a
mobile BS caused by the effect "ducting" could be detected.
The "ducting" effect is a fast change of the refractive index
over height in a layer of the troposphere with a very high gradient of this index. This results in a curvature of the propagation
trajectory of the radio waves higher or equal to the Earth radius
and could lead to an increase of the level of interference in radio
communications devices that have a limited coverage area and are
located at a greater distance from other transmitting stations. This
phenomenon can be due to a number of factors, such as vapors
above the sea surface, temperature inversion, and advection, and
the resulting effect is dependent on the variations in height of the
troposphere reflectance layers.
To study this effect and its impact on increasing the interference, it is necessary to analyze the RF data collected from longterm monitoring and enforce adequate methods for its analysis. In
addition, successful prediction of this effect can be achieved by

linking the RF measurement data with other time and environmental data, such as hours of the day, humidity variation, temperature
variation, and recognizing advection effects, together with the applications of proper statistical or data mining techniques, or advanced ML algorithms.
In [18], we use a similar platform to the one described in Figure 1 for the purpose of long-term spectrum monitoring but store
the monitoring data in a private cloud. Through an analysis of the
stored RF data from the long-term spectrum monitoring, we determined that the reason for the SINR degradation in the uplink
(UL) of a mobile BS on the North Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria is
the interference from sources located at quite a distance from the
operating BS and the occurrence of the effect of ducting. Figures 7
and 8 show the time-frequency variations of the received power for
the UL channel of a Global System for Mobile Communications
(GSM)/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS
900) with and without interference, while in Figures 9 and 10, the
averaged maximum and minimum measured values with and without interference are given [18].
The analysis of the RF data from the long-term monitoring
showed that in the range of 869 MHz to 888 MHz, the signal-tointerference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in the UL channel of the BS
is severely degraded. The changes of the SINR are random and
