Conference Report: The 2017 Radar Conference

eturning to the west coast after an 8-year hiatus, the 2017
Radar Conference was held
for the first time held in Seattle at
the Westin Hotel, 8-12 May, 2017.
Sponsored jointly by the Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society and the Seattle IEEE Chapter,
the conference was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of
the incorporation of Pacific Aero
Products as the Boeing Airplane
Company, lending an historic
theme to the event. This theme is

reflected in the conference logo

(Figure 1) which combines iconic
Seattle landmarks, the Space Needle and Mt. Rainier, with a B&W seaplane, the first Boeing aircraft, and the E-3 AWACS. Conference technical co-sponsors include the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS),
Signal Processing Society (SPS), Antennas and Propagation
(A&P) Society, and from the UK the IET and RADAR 2017. Total
attendance for the three-day event was nearly 600 with delegates
from industry, government and academia in attendance representing 33 countries.
The conference received
excellent corporate support
which enabled presentation
of the AESS Radar Summer
School jointly with the radar
conference (see AESS Magazine Issue June 2017), which
occurred for the first time,
and Women in Engineering

grateful to all.
The conference Technical
Program comprised 344 technical
papers: 196 oral presentations in
four simultaneous tracks and 148
poster presentations. The papers
represented the full range of topics of current and future interest
to the radar community: innovative applications and system architectures, algorithms, phenomenology and hardware. Overall
organization followed traditional
practices with the Plenary held in
the morning session of the first
day. The conference theme was
represented in the topics presented. We began with a look to the
past as Dr. David Whelan presented a brief history of radar development in the Pacific Northwest, going back to the BOMARC era.
Next Mr. Ryan Hartman, CEO of Insitu, spoke of a century defined
by autonomy, addressing current trends but with an eye to the past.
Expanding the innovation theme, Google's Dr. Jamie Lien gave an
excellent presentation on Project Soli: using a microscale radar to
