Epic Aircraft, which merged from financial peril in 2010, has nearly 30 LT single-engine turboprops flying, and many were built at the Epic factory by their owners. Lancair has sold more than 2,100 kits since its founding in 1984. Plus, of the some 24,400 experimental aircraft in operation across the U.S., more than 5,200 are operated in the state of Oregon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It’s no wonder why: the eastern edge of the Cascade Range offers gorgeous country for flying with sunny days and cool nights. While piston, turboprop and jet aircraft operators receive
full service, Professional Air’s avionics technicians currently provide basic services such as IFR, pitot static and transponder certifications for owners and operators of experimental aircraft. To expand its capabilities, the service center is working with the FAA and the local flight standards district office to meet new requirements for the experimental market. “The FAA is looking closely at how Part 145 repair stations are able to work on non-certified, experimental aircraft,” Wallace said. “They want better control and documentation of the work performed by repair stations and the avionics service and installation work performed on experimental aircraft. We haven’t yet fully seen the hoops that a repair station will have to jump through in order to work on these types of aircraft. The effort is worth it. There is good potential for service and installation work in this market, especially in central Oregon.” q
Bend, a former logging town, is the largest city in central Oregon and near the geographic center of the state. The city and its towering Mt. Bachelor is now a hotspot for skiers, snowboarders and other adventure-seeking tourists.
