Lewis Holder installs Garmin avionics on a customer’s Collins Proline 21-equipped Citation 525A. Possibly the first of its kind, according to Holder.

“Of course, they consider that to be a huge benefit, because they don’t have to reposition their aircraft and deal with things like getting their pilots to and from my place or pay for the fuel costs.” Holder installs and upgrades avionics, performs full panel retrofits, and handles troubleshooting, repair and certifications, virtually everything a customer needs except in-house bench repair. “I have extensive experience on everything from the smallest piston up to Gulfstream-class aircraft,” Holder said. “One of my current customers operates a Dornier 328 business jet.” In September 2011, Holder installed new Garmin GTN 750 and GTN 650 systems in two Collins Proline 21-equipped Citation 525A aircraft, possibly the first of its kind.

“The 525A is not included in the GTN-series STC,” said Holder, who worked directly with Garmin and Collins and relied on DER services for systems installation and flight testing. “It required a lot of work to find a certification path. “Cessna was not involved. The DERs I know have extensive knowledge in these situations, and they asked me the tough questions. I, in turn, asked those questions of Garmin and Collins and included those answers in my data package to the DERs. Support from Garmin and Collins made it possible.” The aircraft are not LPV capable due to the limitations of the Proline 21 as originally configured by the manufacturer, according to Holder.
