PSI Celebrates 30 Years Repairing Instruments, Avionics

or 30 years, Pacific Southwest Instruments has been repairing instruments for general aviation, airlines, helicopters, business and military aircraft. Based in Corona, Calif., the company started as a one-man shop with Jim Joubert, PSI’s ambitious, then-27-year-old founder, doing everything, from making sales calls to working on instruments, even handling paperwork, packaging and shipping. Joubert started his aviation career at age 18 as an apprentice instrument technician at Pan Western Instruments in Long Beach, Calif. In the following 10 years, he managed Golden West Skyways’ instrument shop and started his first business, J&S Aircraft Instruments. At J&S, he bought and sold aircraft instruments, provided repair work for other instrument shops in Southern California and began acquiring test equipment. Then came PSI. “PSI started out in a business park just up the street

from its current location,” said Ray McDonald, vice president of sales and customer service for PSI. “Jim rented one out of nine 1,500-square-foot office spaces, and during the next seven years ended up with six of the spaces.” Today, 52 employees provide some 55,000 aircraft instrument and component repair capabilities for customers in North and South America, Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa. “There’s not much we can’t do,” McDonald said regarding the instruments and components that are both shipped in and delivered by customers. The company’s modern facility features 37,000 square feet located within walking distance of Corona Municipal Airport in suburban Los Angeles. Nearly a quarter of the space is dedicated to the company’s extensive inventory. PSI specializes in supporting legacy equipment by manufacturing parts that are
