Be a giver, not always a taker. How many times have you strolled into the break area and found great doughnuts or other freshly-baked treats waiting for you? When the chorus of “Who bought the doughnuts?” rings out, is your name ever mentioned? Nothing should stop you from doing your share to supply office snacks from time to time.

If your workplace has a freezer, bring a couple of boxes of popsicles on a hot day. Go healthy and bring a case of bottled water for your co-workers to enjoy. Word spreads fast in an office, and you can be assured you will get credit for your generosity. 8. Remain focused while driving. Talking on the phone, texting, eating, inputting the GPS and any other number of tasks cause more than 5,000 deaths each year. Among the most distracting activities is texting and driving. It is not just the activity of teenagers. Recognize that multitasking while driving is a formula for disaster. This should be common sense, and it’s just good protocol for everyday work and life. q

“But, that’s next year and just a few months away – Where can I get this system installed?” the customer asked. Well, that’s a challenge as well, because the installer must have a supplemental type certificate for the entire solution of all the components. There simply isn’t much being offered for a full solution at the moment. Even if there was, you are still going to be required to get a new letter of acceptance, which could take months to get approved by the local Flight Standard District Office, especially since the workload is so high. “You said 2015 is for another portion of this equation – what did you mean by that?” the customer followed up. I meant that many operators were told if they put in this initial solution, when 2015 rolls around and Europe is requiring VDL Mode 2, they would be exempt from having to upgrade because they complied early with the first portion. Sometimes, you have to ask what it really means to be exempt. In this case, it means 75 percent of the aircraft operating in Europe will already be compliant, so the remaining 25 percent will be managed into the airspaces when possible, with priority given to the people already compliant. “Wow, this FANS-1/A topic is just the tip of the iceberg,” the customer noted.
