While they may look like gliders/ sailplanes, because of their engine, they are viewed as light sport aircraft in the eyes of the FAA. “They fall under the same guidelines and restrictions as any LSA,” explained Jim Lee, owner of Lee Aviation LLC. “Unless, of course, it’s a homebuilt experimental motor-glider.” Lee said that when pilot/owners outfit the Phoenix Motor-Glider, his company requests they buy “every piece of avionics gear they can put in it. It’s a combination of want to have and the fact that there are some really great new avionics available to help pilots get the most out of their motor-gliding experience. Units like these give pilots a lot more awareness and information than they ever could
imagine in the past. They make soaring much easier and safer.” In addition, the copious amounts of available in-flight lift and glide information make it easier for low-time motor-glider enthusiasts to get more enjoyment out of the hobby. “The rising cost of fuel is attracting more pilots to motor-gliding,” Lee said. “It offers them the best combination of powered flight and the challenge of soaring.” However, Lee cautioned that avionics shops need to understand motorgliders require the airframe manufacturer’s approval before any equipment can be added. “Just like any LSA, you need a letter of authorization from the manufacturer before any equipment can
be installed in the aircraft,” he said. “I’d strongly suggest that the avionics shop leave obtaining the LOA up to the aircraft’s owner, unless the shop is familiar with the aircraft and its manufacturer. “A good shop will have all the technical skills to do any installation, but whether or not that installation is legal is another matter. When we sell a motor-glider, we make sure the owner is fully aware of all the regulations. We also have it noted in the aircraft’s documentation clearly indicating the requirement for an LOA before any modifications or equipment changes can be made to the aircraft.” “A lot of glider pilots are totally
