sultant, also was pleased with the idea of providing RNP-RF capability without requiring formal approval. “The FAA will be hamstrung getting increased capacity, especially in metroplex terminal areas, if it’s restricted to airlines and Gulfstreams,” McDowell said. Equipage may present an opportunity for avionics vendors and shops. Few light GA aircraft have flight directors, a majority have GPS, and many of those may have an autopilot. The specific requirement in AC 20-138B for aircraft to fly RF legs is “an autopilot or FD (flight director)
with at least ‘roll-steering’ capability that is driven by the RNP system. The autopilot/FD must operate with suitable accuracy to track the lateral and, as appropriate, vertical paths required by a specific RNP procedure.” The author is an instrument-rated pilot and partner in a piston single, which currently has an IFR-approved WAAS-capable GPS and interfaces with a single-axis autopilot through a GPS “roll steering” module. Steinbicker was unable to state whether or not that equipment, which is common in older piston aircraft, would
be sufficient to meet the AC 20-138B requirement. If the FAA requires a flight director, this could help drive sales of glass panel upgrades. Garmin’s G600 and Aspen’s Evolution EFD-1000 Pro both provide flight-director capability when used with an appropriate autopilot. How will this work in practice? Stay tuned. The FAA’s 2010 National Airspace and Procedures Plan called for “pervasive use of PBN to improve flight operations… (including RNP where beneficial)” in the 2012-15 time frame. q
