and operates 80 helicopters used in forestry, firefighting, construction, mining, oil and gas, emergency medical and more. “Our division grew out of VIH Helicopters or Vancouver Island Helicopters,” said Arneson, who started at VIH as an avionics manager in 1993. “Our employees number around 45 or 50 with the addition of independent contractors. “Each division that operates helicopters has its own maintenance staff and facilities, but we do a lot of the major overhaul work for those companies.” In addition, VIH Aerospace serves mostly larger helicopter operators, including air ambulance, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other law enforcement and provincial governments. The facility is a Bell Helicopter-approved service center equipped with a LASELEC MRO 200 laser wire marker.

“We’re kind of soup to nuts,” Arneson said. “Our Transport Canada certificate covers everything from Cessna 172s to the Challenger 604 on the fixed-wing side, and from Bell 47s up to the S-92 in helicopters. Although the majority of our work is with helicopters, we have quite a bit of capability.
“Our technicians have a tremendous amount of expertise. In each department we have leads with 20-to-30 years experience. We have very high-time people with good reputations, and they’re grooming the next generation. We have some great people coming up through the ranks.”
