Damage Control

y at least one measure, 2011 was a year for the record books. The U.S. experienced 12 natural disasters, and each caused at least $1 billion in damage. That’s the highest tally in the 30 years that anyone has kept count. All told, disasters – including the spring tornado outbreak, the Texas wildfires and Hurricane Irene – cost Americans more than $52 billion, and counting. While this is a huge cost, an even bigger cost is the future losses paid by businesses in each locale. Thousands of small companies affected by those storms may never again open their doors. According to the Insurance Information Institute, that number averages about 40 percent. The businesses and the livelihoods they provide simply disappear with the truckloads of debris. Yet, some of this can be prevented. According to a survey by the Ad Council conducted in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they don’t have an emergency plan in place for their business. At the same time, 94 percent of small business owners believe a disaster could seriously disrupt their business within the next two years, according to another American Red Cross and FedEx small business survey. “Failing to plan is planning to fail,” said Mike Minzes, CEO of emergency preparedness and business disaster recovery planning company INEVOLVE SB.

How to Protect Your Shop with a Disaster Plan
While you can’t control Mother Nature, you can control how you will react to her mayhem by drafting a disaster-recovery plan for your shop. By charting how you will respond to such an emergency, how you will communicate with your employees, vendors and customers, and how you will restore your money-making services, you will put the pieces together that can help your shop survive once the storm passes. Proper Planning Think of a disaster-recovery plan as any other kind of business plan; it’s just as important as any marketing plan you might devise for a new service offering, even though there is no immediate payoff. “It’s an action plan to follow in
