you also will need to re-arrange payroll, file insurance claims and work through clean-up efforts, so factor in that time, as well. 2. Your people. It takes people to make your business run: suppliers, customers and especially employees. Establish a communications procedure that will allow you to reconnect with each group by using telephone trees, email, websites, social media and other tools. For employees, you will want several methods of contact, including cellphone and landline numbers, which will allow you to see how everyone is doing and also communicate restart dates and other logistics. Similarly, vendors, bankers, insur-
ance agents, Internet providers, landlords, local-government liaisons and customers will need status updates, so have those numbers handy, too. And, speaking of your people, recognize that they may be facing their own struggles, so be prepared to lend a sympathetic ear. 3. Your insurance and financial protection. In addition to physical property coverage, check into flood protection, if that is one of your risks, and loss-of-business coverage so you can pay bills, according to the SBA. Determine how relocation and business-resumption costs will be reimbursed, and review the kind of documentation you will need for claims. Check if your disaster-recovery planning helps your premiums, discuss with your landlord how you will deal with your lease if he or she can’t rebuild
promptly and determine how you will access money if your bank is out of commission. 4. Your equipment. Running an avionics shop takes a lot of gear – both tools and product. You will need methods to quickly restock. But, in the meantime, you need the bare minimum of supplies and paperwork to return to work, according to the SBA. Perform a full inventory of what you use on a daily basis and take pictures of everything in your inventory. In the event you have hard-to-replace items, keep duplicates off-site in a safe location, too. And, since you’re already collecting personal information about each of your employees, keep track of who owns useful gear for emergency recovery, including four-wheel-drive trucks, tractors or specialized emergency training.
