hether you’re an avionics repair shop shipping instruments by FedEx, a maintenance organization flight testing a customer’s aircraft or a business that lets employees use their own cars to run errands, you may be putting yourself or your business at risk. “In the commercial aviation insurance business, we often see many business owners or managers fail to properly manage risk,” said Brent Anderson, senior vice president for CS&A Aviation Insurance, an independent insurance agency specializing in aircraft, airport and aviation-related businesses. According to Anderson, if you think “hold harmless agreements” protect your business, that your landlord’s building insurance policy covers your losses or that your parts inventory is insured under your property policy, think again. What if an employee takes off with your customer’s aircraft? You may be surprised to learn that the theft is not covered by your insurance. By law, as an employer, you have given your employee permission to “operate” the aircraft. You will need an employee dishonesty policy to recoup the loss. “We have found that many of the aviation business own26

ers have grown up in their business as pilots, technicians or mechanics,” Anderson said. “They have a good working knowledge for the practical side of their business but have never been exposed to the issues of how to protect their business.” That’s where CS&A Aviation Insurance can help.
