hether they’re used for en route information or specific details about a tricky approach into an unfamiliar airport, thousands of pilots rely on their Jepp charts for critical information during every flight. And, while most pilots find the information indispensable, very few know the story behind these incredible pieces of paper. Well, as the story goes, it all started in 1930, when Captain Elrey B. Jeppesen purchased a small notebook in Cheyenne, Wyo. At the time, Jeppesen was an airmail pilot for the Boeing Air Transport Company, the forerunner of United Airlines. He had spent the previous two years making the first aerial photo mappings of the Mexican coast from Brownsville, Texas, to south of the Yucatan Peninsula. Jeppesen’s airmail routes took him to places like Salt Lake City, Utah, Reno, Nev., and Cheyenne, Wyo., at all times of the day and in all kinds of weather. It wasn’t long before he became all too familiar with the poor navigational system that caused too many pilots to become lost along these same routes. Jeppesen kept his aforementioned “little black book” with him on every flight and jotted down explicate notes and diagrams pertaining to each airport. His level of detail not only included runway direction and length, but also the heights of nearby obstacles, including terrain, water towers and smokestacks, so he could establish safe circling altitudes. He even included telephone numbers of local farmers who could provide local weather information.
