Harriet Quimby’s legacy went well beyond aviation, as she was an accomplished writer, photographer and world traveler.

While a WASP, Parish test flew aircraft after repairs and broke in new aircraft. After the war, because of her gender, she could not find employment as a pilot. Not even her uncle, the president of the Upjohn Company, would hire her. Parish married Preston “Pete” Parish, and they started a family. Together, the couple began to collect airplanes. She became a member of both the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame and the Experimental Aircraft Association Hall of Fame. She performed airshows and was the owner of Kal-Aero in Kalamazoo, Mich. She earned the Congressional Gold Medal for her service as a WASP and died in 2010, in Palm Springs, Calif. She left behind the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, known as the Air Zoo, and her P-40 hangs in the lobby. Yvonne Brill is not a household name, but perhaps it should, although she didn’t make her mark as a pilot. Because of her

gender, Brill’s high school physics teacher thought she would never amount to anything. By 1951, she earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Manitoba, majoring in mathematics, and a Master of Science from the University of Southern California, majoring in physical chemistry. Brill began her career with the Douglass Aircraft Company, and in 1946, she moved into the project RAND contract, where she became a research analyst on rocket propellant systems, specializing in missiles. While working on project RAND, she participated in several studies, which helped develop the first set of rocket industry standards. In 1966, Brill began work as a senior engineer in propulsion systems at RCA AstroElectronics. During her tenure at RCA, she patented the electrothermal hydrazine thruster, now produced by Aerojet. First proven in flight in the

early 1980s, the thruster has been used in more than 200 satellites. In addition, Brill managed development of the Teflon Solid Propellant Propulsion System used on NOVA spacecraft operated by the U.S. Navy. She has held many positions with different companies, including Marquardt Corp., Curtiss-Wright, United Aircraft Corp., FMC, Inmarsat and NASA. Conduct a Web search, and you will likely find her listed as an aerospace consultant. Brill earned many awards. She is a fellow of The Society of Women Engineers, which lists her as an engineering pioneer. The organization gave her an award for achievement in 1986, and the Resnik Challenger Medal in 1993. In 1999, she was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame. NASA awarded Brill a Public Service Medal in 2001. In 2002,
