around the range limit requires other technologies, whether old (high frequency or HF) or new (satellite-based). For operators who depart U.S. airspace over Canada or Mexico, an up-to-date domestic avionics suite probably will be sufficient – though specific requirements may apply in each country. Both Canada and Mexico have announced plans to require 406 MHz emergency locator transmitters, though the plans currently are on hold. Operators crossing the oceans to Europe or Asia, on the other hand, will require additional equipment – the exact specifications vary depending on where they wish to operate, and may have a direct effect on operational flexibility. A light-piston aircraft owner flying to
quipment requirements for international operations vary considerably depending on the airspace the operator uses. In the U.S., both navigation and communications systems are in a state of flux, with satellite-based systems, such as GPS, gradually displacing the very high frequency navigation systems in wide use since World War II. A similar situation will eventually happen with digital communications displacing today’s voice-based VHF communications system. In longrange oceanic and polar operations, however, a mix of both old and state-of-the art technologies is in use, because VHF signals have one fundamental limitation: They can only be received by antennas within line of sight of the transmitter.
