able to directly upload to our servers on the Internet at 5.76 megabits per second is quite remarkable, but the customer must be willing to pay about $40 per month for cellular data services on top of our monthly service charges.” Wi-Flight is also working on a means of extracting the engine data from aircraft with Garmin G1000 and Avidyne Entegra/R9 cockpit avionics, again in a fully automated manner. This would allow Wi-Flight to detect parameters, such as cylinder head temperature and exhaust gas temperature, as well as oil-related exceedances, propeller overspeed and hot starts on turboprop aircraft. It would make the FDM service available to many operators of Cirrus, Cessna, Daher-Socata and Piper aircraft. Newer versions of the G1000 record engine parameters onto a data card, according to Gosselin. He hopes to have a “semi-automated” method of extracting the data from those cards by this summer, with a fully automated system by year-end. Newer Cirrus operators have the option of free flight playbacks at http:// cirrusreports.com. You can view the flights, but there is no analysis, no alerting, Gosselin said. It graphs engine data and basic flight parameters and gives a map showing where the plane went. The Cirrus Reports site is inherently a manual system for uploading all of the data and sifting through it. Fleet operators still would have to manually sift through all the data or pay analysts to do so. It’s quite different from Wi-Flight’s automated analysis solution. Gosselin also has an eye on a feature for flight schools that would allow the instructor or student to tap on the recorder’s touchscreen in order to set up markers in the recording. In the playback, the instructor could skip to those markers to get to the flight’s problem areas quickly. The code could be rolled out rapidly, given sufficient demand, he said. q
