the inaugural Aircell Scholarship, which recently was announced by its sponsor company. Aircell, through a donation valued at more than $50,000 to AEA’s scholarship campaign, will offer a $2,500 award annually to an aspiring avionics or aircraft maintenance technician. Finally, owning your industry also means recognizing and rewarding unusual achievement. Industry honors announced during the show include recognition of Paul Ryan as the recipient of the 2012 AEA Lifetime Achievement Award. Others recognized for their contributions included Jim Joubert of Pacific Southwest Instruments, recipient of the 2012 AEA Member of the Year Award, and Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics as the 2012 AEA Associate Member of the Year.

In the U.S., the ongoing threat of user fees – which has loomed over the industry since Ronald Reagan occupied the White House – plus high fuel prices and widespread economic stagnation are central to the position the avionics industry finds itself and were highlighted by AEA President Paula Derks in her state of the association address. “How we in the general aviation industry move forward is up to us,” she said, reminding attendees that public opinion isn’t always favorable. “Stop apologizing for who and what we are.” Looking toward the future, Derks discussed the need to identify emerging technologies and methods, with the idea of incorporating them into new products and processes.
