A vibrant discussion occurred during the Association CEO Round Table, which featured major aviation trade association CEOs discussing the issues, challenges and opportunities facing general and business aviation. various committees, she singled out the association’s Strategic Outlook Committee, saying it was looking for emerging “game-changers” likely to impact the avionics industry as a whole, both favorably and unfavorably. Among the topics that panel is considering, Derks noted, are the future of dealer networks in a world with instant connectivity plus the resulting paradigm shifts new technologies, regulations and other factors may bring. Throughout the week, government policies toward general aviation as a whole and the avionics certification process specifically were natural hot topics, just as they are every other week of the year. Ric Peri, AEA vice president of government and industry affairs, kicked off the show’s policy sessions with a group of Federal Aviation Administration managing executives, including FAA Deputy Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety John Hickey. Paul Ryan was named the AEA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the AEA’s board of directors. Among Ryan’s many achievements is the creation of the Ryan Stormscope, which allows pilots to view lightning activity around the aircraft.

Participants included Ed Bolen, president of the National Business Aviation Association; Craig Fuller, president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association; Jim Coyne, president of the National Air Transportation Association; Matthew Zuccaro, president of the Helicopter Association International; and Ed Smith, senior vice president of international affairs for the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. All of the association heads reiterated their efforts opposing user fees on general aviation and urged attendees to become more involved in actively communicating their concerns about various government proposals affecting the avionics industry.
