Browsing new general aviation and light-sport aircraft during the 38th annual Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In left little doubt about today’s preferences in panel equipment: glass. Electronic instruments now seem the hands-down cockpit-equipment standard.

bare-bone basics in glass and flight control fail to excite many owners comfortable with the less-capable but lesscostly panels they already have. This equation is poised to change thanks to a partnership between Aspen Avionics and Avidyne. The partners are jointly developing a supplemental type certificate, packaging an Aspen interface that marries Avidyne’s DFC90 digital autopilot to Aspen’s Evolution 1000 glass cockpit system. Though value priced, this is no barebone basic system at a cost that won’t swamp the value of thousands of older single-engine piston planes. Starting at approximately $20,000, plus installation, it is significantly below the combined price of a competing autopilot and most other glass-instrument packs. Not only does the package incorporate advanced features found previously only in far-more expensive flight deck systems, it adds the appeal of some life-preserving features delivered via the autopilot. The packaging of the two under an STC should greatly expand the strata of aircraft owners who covet glass and an Otto. Some on the fence may opt in after recognizing the value of this high-capability package. At $20,000 plus installation, it delivers a great package of capabilities. YOU ALREADY KNOW THESE GUYS… AN ATTITUDE-BASED TEAM WITH ATTITUDE TO SPARE Aspen Avionics can still be called a relative newcomer, barely six years into delivering product. At the top of Aspen’s offerings is the innovative Evolution 1000 line of retrofit glass-panel equipment.

Avidyne’s been around much longer. But, only in the past decade or so did the company expand its scope beyond its pioneering multifunction-display products, moving into primary flight displays, hazard-avoidance systems, transponders, a full integrated panel package and, just during the past year, adding stand-alone panel-mounted all-in-one units with WAAS GPS, VHF, nav and comm, and ILS. Aspen’s Evolution series allows a building-block solution to the desire for a solid-state panel. The Evolution 1000 PFD, 1000 MFD and 500 MVD rounds out the basic models. These three 3.5-inch-wide-by-7-inch-tall boxes are designed to fit directly into panel openings vacated by a vertical pair of instruments; two Evolution 1000 units – a PFD Pro and MFD – provide redundant air and attitude sensors and one-button backup capability for the PFD and MFD functions. Much like Aspen’s products, Avidyne’s DFC100 and DFC90 digital flight control systems both initially targeted the retrofit market, first with the SR line from Cirrus. The two are designed as slide-in replacements for the S-TEC 55X installed as original equipment in non-Garmin G1000 SR20s and SR22s. In the Aspen/Avidyne package, the DFC90 works off the Aspen PFD1000 sensors in the same way the autopilots work off the solid-state ADAHRS in Avidyne’s own high-end Entegra Release 9 integrated avionics package. Working as the flight-control slave to output from the PFD1000’s attitude and speed sensors, the DFC90 offers features that compare with new-install systems in many higherend turbine-power aircraft.
