What was the objective
of this project?
The objective was to clean up the
instrument panel and give glass-cockpit
capability with engine monitoring to
reduce pilot workload. The customer
also requested custom instrument-

What makes this project unique?
It was a custom, machined panel with
integrated iPad dock that is made
ready for Aspen Avionics Connected
Panel Technology, allowing iPad apps
to feed the waypoints and frequencies
to the panel using Bluetooth. Santa
Fe Aero is on the leading edge of
this new technology. We eliminated
12 steam gauges with the glasspanel
installation, installed Aspen
Evolution MFD/PFD with full battery
backup Garmin GTN650 JPI 930 Engine
Analyzer S-TEC 30 autopilot.
Did any problems occur while
working on the project?
Original quote was for a Garmin GNS
530W. The customer changed to a GTN650
with a GTX 32 remote transponder, which
allowed the extra space in the panel to
accommodate the iPad.
How were the problems resolved?
We redesigned the layout of the panel to
accommodate the additional request.
Did you learn anything from the project?
We learned how to interface an iPad to
the aircraft audio system.
What was the customer’s response?
The customer was very impressed
with the layout of the panel, especially
the fact that the iPad was in a handy
location to use in flight instead of on
the lap. More importantly, his wife
thought it turned out excellent. Both
are very impressed with the new
capability of the avionics package.q
The project was completed Dec. 8, 2011, and made for a happy customer.
