Demand for an avionics technician likely will grow in coming years. “People aren’t going to be buying new aircraft,” Potter said, at least when it comes to piston-driven flivvers primarily used by individuals or small businesses, preferring instead to modernize the ones they have. This means more work for the avionics shop. New aircraft in this category, of course, likely will be delivered with all the bells and whistles already installed. But, the equipment didn’t get there by magic – someone in a new-aircraft factory installed it – and it still needs maintenance. Meanwhile, new mandates like the ADS-B backbone of the FAA’s nextgeneration air traffic control system will result in even greater demand for quality avionics technicians. “It’s going to be very competitive,” Potter suggested. No one knows what the future holds, especially when combining aircraft and aviation with innovations in electronics. But, it’s a safe bet to say tomorrow’s successful avionics tech will have more in common with a software engineer or networking technician than ever.
