For the authorities, I say, ‘Lead us, follow us, or get out of our way.’ We can do this together, or we can do this without you. But, make no mistake; we will develop the next generation of safety-enhancing revolutionary products with or without you. Where do you choose to stand?

normal years included evolutionary product changes, such as upgrades, new features and new looks. But, normal years also lack the truly revolutionary changes that come every five to 10 years. As a result, I must report that the 2012 AirVenture was – you guessed it – normal. While I understand the value and excitement of revolutionary new products in the pilot and aircraft owner community, the value of evolutionary change is at the regulators’ level. It allows the regulators a year or two to catch up with what the industry is introducing. Everyone in the technology field gets excited when technology advances at the speed of light – remember high school physics and what is the speed of light? (I’ll answer that in a bit.) Regulators and bureaucracies move at a snail’s pace. The years of simple evolutionary change allows the bureaucracy the opportunity to catch up, at least a little bit. My return ride from AirVenture was spectacular. One long-time AEA member was visiting our booth, and we talked about my travels and intended return from Oshkosh. He made a fabulous recommendation: take the high-speed ferry out of Milwaukee across Lake Michigan. That has been on my list of things to do, and I really wasn’t looking forward to transiting Chicago during the Monday-morning rush hour. What a great cruise – the lake was glass smooth. I watched a 1939 German-built Ju 52 Trimotor cross directly above. In fact, it slightly adjusted the route in order to fly directly over the east-bound ferry. It was a great view and reminder of the history and grandeur of AirVenture. From Muskegon, Mich., I programmed the GPS to get me home and not via the Interstate. The basic technology avoided the high-density Interstates and

routed me through farmland, rural communities and two-lane country roads. However, if you completely believe the mainstream media, the ride would have revealed deadly drought, unimaginable poverty and declining infrastructure. After living in Washington, D.C., for 20 years, I’ve concluded that the media’s first job is to sell advertising. For the cable news shows, this means creating a fear factor so you cannot go more than a few hours without checking back. I first noticed this during the O.J. Simpson murder trial in 1994, which lasted several months. Looking back, it seemed there was 24-hours-a-day coverage of the trial. Everywhere you went, someone had a television tuned into the trial speculating what was and was not presented. Today, if you tune into the cable news (entertainment) shows, you might feel a lot of doom and gloom. Regardless, I observed some areas of drought, along with areas of growth. There are towns that have been ravaged by factory closures and growth in entrepreneurial start-ups. There are areas where roads and infrastructure are in dire need of repair, and lots of construction sites where the infrastructure is being given a facelift. Outside of the reporters in New York, Atlanta or Washington, D.C., the country simply looks pretty normal. At this year’s AEA International Convention & Trade Show, the theme was, “Take Pride. Take Ownership. Take Back Your Industry.” This isn’t to suggest that the world is perfect; the economy is still tight. Those with money are spending it, and too many are without. But, as I saw in
