Fit to Function
he pulse of your avionics shop beats in time with that of your employees. While this is a quaint little thought for the day, it’s also true: You need your people to be healthy if you want your business to be healthy. Like any part of running a shop, you do have some control over these inputs to production – namely, by creating a wellness program as part of your benefits package. Slightly fewer than 30 percent of small businesses offer wellness programs, according to a recent survey by insurer MetLife, but that’s up 7 percent from last year and nearly double the number five years ago.

How to Implement a Company Wellness Program
The reason for the change is simple: Companies have realized that healthy employees improve productivity and reduce operating costs. Still, the single factor keeping the other 71 percent from following suit is the perception that it’s a horribly expensive endeavor. Sure, offering an on-site gym and an on-staff nutritional consultant is an expensive prospect, but it’s not the only route you can take. Even a small investment in wellness can make a big difference in the fitness of your people. By recognizing the rewards of doing something, as well as identifying what your people really want, you can create a customtailored program that fits your shop’s unique needs. Indeed, if you have the will, you can create a fitness plan that fits. Well and Good Workplace wellness programs include initiatives recognizing the reality that employees spend the better part of their day at work, and many of their lifestyle choices – from where they eat lunch to how often they exercise – revolve around the circumstances of their jobs. Activities in these programs can run the gamut, but they are intended to keep employees healthy and, indirectly, lower company health insurance costs. The need for the benefit is highlighted by a bevy of medical research correlating long periods of inactivity – in particular, sitting – with higher incidents of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The most recent, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in March, reported that sitting more than 11 hours a day, including time at work and at home, increases the risks of dying by 40 percent during the next three years over those who only sat for four hours a day, regardless of the general physical condition and health of the sitter. Worse yet, fewer than half of all adults meet the World Health Organization physical activity recommendations for at least 150 minutes
