Employees more completely embrace wellness initiatives that incorporate their desires. Gather an employee wellness committee, or at least a wellness coordinator, and poll employees to rank the initiatives you are able to provide. A health-risk assessment may help them choose, too. This questionnaire addresses health risks and qualityof-life issues based on family history, medical conditions and lifestyle choices, and it’s usually available for a few dollars per employee from benefits providers. If necessary, provide a gift to employees for completing this confidential survey. You can also review data you receive from your insurance provider to identify areas that need attention, or you can work with them

to provide health screenings that identify problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes. Make sure your management team participates in the program and demonstrates they are each making healthy decisions. Leadership is critical if you want the program to affect the culture of your company, according to WELCOA, and your participation will also prevent the program from fizzling after a few months. For the program to work, it must be a long-term commitment, even if it starts with baby steps. These easy steps work your business up the first two levels of Partnership’s wellness program planning pyramid, but after a year or two of doing things yourself, you may want to expand the program to keep things fresh. Build on

your physical-activity campaign, offer additional lunch-and-learn educational sessions and find a provider to offer health screenings or risk assessments, newsletters, online resources and health coaching by phone. By addressing specific risks, you have reached the Partnership’s third level. The fourth and last addresses special health needs, including long-term case management of chronic conditions. This may be a long way off if you’re just getting started. But, if you are concerned about keeping your employees healthy and productive, it’s an aspiring goal after you have laid a solid foundation. Just like the road to healthy living, creating a successful wellness program for your shop starts with taking the first step. q
