in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the talking heads need to get their heads outside the rarified air of the media headquarters. Yes, the public is taking charge – in spite of the bureaucrats. Without getting political, I think the normal was best described by a roadside sign I noticed as I was leaving Oshkosh. The sign simply read: “Dear Mr. President, I built this business – not you.” This message stayed with me from community to community. Everywhere I rode, the local communities were taking charge, and the world was normal. Now, to bring this back to our

world of aviation, the roadside message still resonates as we start the fall AEA Regional Meetings: Dear administrator, we built this industry – not you. We, the men and women who build, maintain and fly today’s aircraft, have made aviation the safest form of transportation, not the bureaucracy. And, we have developed new, life-saving technologies in spite of the impediments of government. As General George S. Patton once said, “Lead me, follow me or get out of my way.” We have given the authorities a reprieve this year with evolutionary products. The time between new and novel revolutionary products was once in a generation, but today, it has decreased exponentially. We now see new revolutionary products every three to five years. For the membership, I

can report that the industry is, well, normal. New products are coming and will test the bureaucracy’s ability to respond to these products, but bureaucrats should not become impediments to the next generation of safety-enhancing technology. For the authorities, I say, “Lead us, follow us or get out of our way.” We can do this together, or we can do this without you. But, make no mistake; we will develop the next generation of safety-enhancing revolutionary products with or without you. Where do you choose to stand? We will “Take Pride. Take Ownership.
