Canadore College Gives Aviation Students Hands-on Experience

t Jack Garland Airport in North Bay, Ontario, several avionics students are busy troubleshooting an electrical system on a Cessna 177 Cardinal, while another group tackles a nav/comm on a King Air A100. Such hands-on learning gives each student a chance to accomplish practical, real-worldstyle tasks, from ramp testing to electrical load analysis to bench repairing a transponder. Later in the program, they will find more issues waiting in the wings, including fabricating wire harnesses and configuring and installing avionics. “Our legacy of success as an institution has been our hands-on training methodology that seeks a one-on-one style of learning and competency,” said Peter Kincaid, program coordinator for the avionics maintenance and aircraft structural repair programs. The Canadore College School of Aviation’s satellite campus located at the Jack Garland Airport is about eight kilometers northeast of the main campus. “Our campus is 100 percent a training facility,” Kincaid said. “The aviation campus puts our students where the action is – mere feet from the active Lima taxiway. At our annual spring open house event, we often hear the facility is one of the key factors that influence a student’s decision to choose Canadore.”

Although they don’t maintain certified aircraft, the airport keeps the technicians-in-training on the front lines of aviation. “We’ve had the opportunity to host aircraft for a brief stay when a pilot, company or engineer with a Canadore connection is passing through town – everything from a Diamond Katana and an AS350 B3 to a Bell 407, even a Canadian Military SeaKing Helicopter,” said Kincaid, who holds an aircraft maintenance engineer category E license and a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Choosing an Aviation Program Canadore College offers more than 60 academic programs to its more than 3,500 full-time and 4,500 part-time students. The programs range from business to culinary arts, health care to environmental studies and more. In the aviation program, the students study aircraft maintenance, avionics maintenance and aircraft structural repair. All three aviation maintenance training programs are Transport Canada and Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace accredited. The Canadore aviation faculty and technical support staff are licensed aircraft maintenance engineers with experience in both the fixed-wing and rotary-wing fields.
