From Newsletter to Magazine
Five years later at the AEA’s fall board meeting in September 1963, the board decided the association needed to develop a professionally printed monthly publication to replace the AEA Newsletter. Baker, the AEA’s volunteer executive director at the time, and his wife, Beth, took the lead for the monthly publication. In November 1963, the AEA previewed the publication. Soon after the first preview edition of Avionics News arrived in AEA-member mailboxes, the course of history was changed

membership. The top news item from the first newsletter was that Stomberg had finished the official AEA emblem, and it had been distributed to all 40 members at the time. As the editor, Anderson offered a burned out UV-201A to the member who would submit the winning name for the monthly newsletter. The second issue in June 1958 grew to three pages. The AEA Newsletter continued to grow in size, sometimes reaching 16 pages.

when U.S. President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed on the streets of Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 22, 1963. In the aftermath of a national tragedy, the AEA continued about its business, and the first official Avionics News publication was sent to approximately 100 people in January 1964. This publication, printed on slick paper, featured eight pages of news and three advertisements. Following that publication, color was added to Avionics News a few pages at a time throughout the years. Today, Avionics News is a glossy, four-color trade magazine averaging 80 pages each month and many more advertisements – certainly more than the three ads placed in the 1964 publication – as the magazine now offers advertisers one of the industry’s most sought-after vehicles and dedicated readerships. Avionics News has come a long way since that first issue, but the goals remain the same: To cover the news of AEA members, the general aviation industry, the Federal Aviation Administration and other international regulatory authorities; feature profiles of individuals and companies in the industry; provide technical and business management articles; offer insight into new products and technology; release schedules of pertinent aviation meetings and activities; and publish editorials by top AEA officials.
