hands pushed him to make the decision to leave the law firm and a law career. He returned to school – this time to Harvard Business School – for an MBA focusing on manufacturing. Even then, he ran into obstacles. “All my classmates were going to be consultants or investment bankers,” Gould said. This garnered little interest for him; he wanted to focus on producing things, but there was no pre-defined major in operations. So he pieced together his own course of study and received his MBA with an emphasis on manufacturing and finance. He joined Hewlett Packard in Spokane, Wash., originally in the finance department, with a promise he would be considered for the first operations job that became available. He worked there for three years, first as a cost accounting supervisor and later as a production operations manager building printed circuit boards. “I was happy to finally be in the field I wanted, working in manufacturing, working with machines,” he said. Gould was then recruited by Boeing in nearby Everett, Wash., and spent 12 years in various operations management assignments and culminating in a position directing the wiring responsibility center, with 3,200 employees,
building all the wire harnesses for Boeing’s commercial aircraft. “I learned a lot about building airplanes, about construction methods and about electrical wiring for aircraft,” Gould said. In 2000, Gould decided to leave Boeing to take advantage of an entrepreneurial opportunity that came his way. It was with a struggling startup company that produced medical record documentation software. He came onboard as CEO and loved it. In fact, Gould said, “I enjoy the atmosphere of a startup – the lack of structure, the complete absence of bureaucracy. You are required to be efficient and effective. You perform or die. It is survival of the fittest – you either make it work or it’s all over.” The company turned around, and Gould and his partners sold it. The next opportunity seemed ideal for Gould – an aviation startup. He was recruited by Adam Aircraft in Denver, Colo. “For me, this was perfect,” Gould said. “I was senior vice president of operations, so I set up production and led the quality organization.”
