check the Museum of Science in Boston, Mass., website at www.mos.org to get descriptions of static tubes, dancing bunnies and attractive balloons. The simplest things can generate the most amazing results. Several years ago, while in ninth grade, Andrew Fuller wrote an ActionScript computer game resembling space invaders. To shoot the invading resistors, the player must select the number matching the color of the falling component. The game is known as “When Resistors go Bad.” Personally, I found the game to be a big hit with freshmen college students in the basic electricity classes. It was a big hit with teachers, too, since the students learn the code in a few hours without memorizing inappropriate or silly mnemonics. Although the students still needed a bit of help with significant digits and multipliers, they learned the color code in an easy and fun manner. I’m looking forward to trying Fuller’s newer game, “Space Impeders, Resistance is Hostile.” Last fall, I taught basic electricity with my colleague, Mike Robison. He taught the morning section, and I taught the afternoon section. Robinson is a championshiplevel soaring pilot. He maintains several gliders and motor gliders at his business in Julian, Penn. One of his customers owns a Lange Antares 20E, an electric-powered self-launching glider. To inspire both sections of students, he obtained the owner’s permission to bring the airplane to the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Kathryn Wentzel Lumley Aviation Center.

To me, a pilot naïve to details in the world of soaring, the Antares looked identical to the aircraft shown in the November issue of Avionics News magazine. A closer look revealed some big differences. The aircraft he brought can take off and climb to nearly 10,000 feet using no jet fuel or avgas. Instead, the 42kW (57 HP), 160A brushless motor provides the power for less than $2 worth of electricity. After attaching the wings, demonstrating the motor deployment and retraction mechanism, along with the avionics, he took the plane for a flight around the pattern. Watching it was a surreal experience. When Robison stopped at the hold-short line, of course the motor stopped. The controller must have thought it odd to hear a train whistle in the background while fielding a permission-toContinued on following page
