on multiple low-power phased array
radars. "They could be built on cell
towers, and could work on platforms
too small to carry ADS-B and a
transponder - or used in conjunction
with ADS-B for larger platforms,"
he said. "In most cases, a manned
aircraft should never see a UAV - it
will maneuver to keep itself as far
away as possible."
Both Trapnell and Braasch
see a role for avionics shops and
technicians in UAV maintenance -
as does Dr. Milton Cone, chair of
electrical and computer engineering
at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University. "I expect the avionics
equipment on UAVs to have the
same or more frequent inspections
than current manned systems," Cone
said. "The companies that supply the
equipment used today are likely to
provide that equipment for UAVs."
However, no one expects UAVs to
move beyond their current, largely
experimental, role in domestic
airspace until solutions are found for
sense-and-avoid, lost communications
and other issues, including cost.
While UAVs can be lighter and
smaller than crewed aircraft, this
doesn't necessarily make them
cheaper to operate, particularly
not when you have to pay for both
a human operator and a separate
spotter. As Trapnell said, "You
can spend an awful lot of money
operating an unmanned aircraft."
