have to have a couple of different
wires in a cable assembly, twisting
them with varying lays between the
1-2 data and 3-4 data reduces interference between them.”
The point, according to Bachleda, is that every system, avionics
or otherwise, has different requirements. And different cables meet
them. There are shielded twisted
pairs, shielded untwisted, untwisted in Ethernet, coax, triax, quadax
and others. And just to make the
job interesting, some systems like
TCAS, require phase matching.
“Standard TCAS has eight

cables; four to the upper antenna
and four to the lower antenna,”
Bachleda said. “From each antenna, the signal must be within a
certain wavelength, and it can only
be shifted 135 degrees, for TCAS,
between the cables. Usually, 135
degrees translates to 2 to 3 inches
of cable. And then you must take
into account that no cable is going
to be 100 percent from the manufacturer. So in addition to length
difference, you have to consider
the potential for slight deformity in
the conductor and in the dielectric.
Anything beyond 135 degrees af-

fects the reliability of the signals
and, in turn, the accuracy or reliability of the TCAS.”
Fortunately, the advent of digital
avionics has made one part of the
design process easier. A computerbased network analyzer plugs into
the harness and measures all of
these parameters, “and we provide
the test report with the cables to
show they meet requirements,”
