group for being a female. They considered me one of
the guys and were always very respectful.”
Flor graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree
in aviation maintenance technology in December
2010, just a little more than two years after starting
college. As graduation neared, she was surprised to
learn she earned two awards. Her professors at the
Lumley Aviation Center voted to give Flor the Aviation Faculty Award, which is presented to a graduate
who demonstrates academic achievement, ethics,
teamwork, professionalism and a commitment to excellence in the field of aviation maintenance. She also
earned the Lewis H. Bardo Memorial Award, presented to a graduate who exemplifies the ideals of Lewis
H. Bardo – devotion to duty, helpfulness to others,
friendliness and high ideals.
After graduation, Flor returned to New York to become a technician performing line maintenance on a
variety of CRJs for Pinnacle Airlines at John F. Kennedy International Airport. She has earned an Eddy
Current Testing certification on the CRJ 200 and CRJ
900 main and nose tires. Recently, she became certified as a parts receiving inspector.
When asked if working in the male-dominated
workplace presented any challenges, she replied,
“Yes, definitely. Many times, males think that females
are weak or are not capable of completing a task. We
may not have the biggest muscles, but we sure can
get the job done with high levels of attention to detail
while keeping it above and beyond standards.”
In the near term, Flor plans to earn more certificates
in areas like CAT II and RVSM. Ultimately, she hopes
to move on to either the Federal Aviation Administration or the National Transportation Safety Board.
As her former professor, I have no doubt Flor will
quickly achieve her goals at a young age. q
