high, and decided at least part of

At the first conference in 1990,
the speakers included astronaut
Shannon Lucid, Jeana Yeager of
Voyager fame, Moya Lear, Bobbie
Trout, who set altitude and speed
records, and Dr. Byrd Granger.
“I knew Jeana Yeager, but the
rest of them I just cold-called,”
Chabrian said. “Embry-Riddle did
some local marketing and issued
a press release. We ended up with
140 attendees, and this was intended as a one-time event.”
This conference was the birth of
Women in Aviation, International.
It was a conference long before it
was a membership organization.
“And now, we’re getting ready
to do a regional conference in
October 2013 in Prescott to kick
off the commemoration of our 25th
anniversary of conferences,” she
said.
That same spring, Chabrian
attended the National Congress
for Aviation and Space Education
in St. Louis, Mo. She took a tour
of St. Louis University’s Parks
College and discovered an opening as dean. She was offered the
position and spent five years as
dean and associate vice president.
Meanwhile, each year, she continued having a Women in Aviation
Conference. “Again,” Chabrian
stressed, “I never intended this to
be an organization.”
Women who were studying
aviation or working in the aviation industry had other ideas. The
conference attendees kept asking
how to join. Of course, there was
no organization to join, but the
committee in place for planning the
1995 conference wondered whether
it was time to form an organization. Chabrian’s initial response
may surprise you.
