equipped with everything the aviation organization needs to
keep the fleet running at peak efficiency. The facility includes
departments for inspections, engineering, purchasing and stores,
as well as specialty shops for welding and machining, component overhaul, engine overhaul, paint, upholstery and interior,
sheet metal, composite repair and avionics.
Switching to New Avionics
In the past, KBAL’s avionics shop primarily focused on
maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting. Today, the need for
new avionics installations is shifting the company’s priorities.
“Over the last number of years, we have dedicated resources
to upgrading the avionics as the original avionics packages are
becoming outdated,” Van Reede said. “Contract requirements
as well as Transport Canada-mandated equipment changes, like
406 MHz ELTs, pitot heat fail indication systems, third attitude
indicators, TCAS and now TAWS have presented us with challenges to implement; many of these mods have been installed in
the field.”
Also, changing operating requirements, such as flight following systems and satcoms, have become increasingly important
to Kenn Borek Air’s operations. These changes have meant the
avionics shop has had to adapt and grow, purchase new test and
wire marking equipment, and provide training on new avionics
equipment.
“The shop as it is now is just more than 10 years old,” Van
Reede said. “Before that time, most of the avionics work was
contracted to neighboring avionics shops. We now have nine
people in the shop, including myself, and we have the capabilities to take on the majority of our avionics projects. We also
