Esterline CMC’s interest in broadening its base by developing
products for the Part 23 and light Part 25 markets.
But SmartDeck, as acquired and as being developed, is just
one area where Esterline CMC is adding depth to its general
aviation offerings.
Of EFBs and Tandem
The year after Esterline CMC Electronics acquired the
SmartDeck avionics suite, the company unveiled some
improvements in the package, as well as an array of its
PilotView electronic flight bag products with many geared
to business aviation operators.
And among the advances geared to its EFB users was a
software product dubbed Tandem. This application provides
for integration of mobile computing devices with CMC’s
certified EFBs.
Operators and pilots enjoy the option of using their tablet
computers while in their hotels or in the flight-planning
room of the fixed base operator, and then wirelessly transmit the appropriate data to the Class 2 or Class 3 PilotView
EFBs installed in their aircraft.
This allows pilots use of their iPads away from the airport to acquire weather information, compose and file flight
plans, review aircraft documents, calculate weight and balance data, determine fuel requirements and other preflight
activity.
Once aboard the aircraft, they can interface their iPad to
the aircraft-mounted EFBs, transfer data to the aircraft and
take advantage of the iPad’s and the EFB’s capabilities.
The benefits are numerous, from time savings to the accurate transfer of information to the aircraft from the tablet.
The company also started marketing its STC to install
SmartDeck in Cirrus aircraft.
And about a year ago, the company announced that
Czech Republic aircraft maker Evektor selected SmartDeck
for the EV-55 Outback, a new-generation twin turboprop
under development by the company.
