instruments and other indicators.
In 2010, MCIA launched its True
Blue Power division, which develops
and manufactures the next generation of inverters and emergency batteries to deliver aviation’s growing
electrical needs. When integrated
digital avionics systems reduced the
six-pack to a standby trio, the company stepped up with a 2-inch digital
Standby Attitude Module, SAM for
short. Weighing less than just one of
the three analog instruments it replaces, SAM includes a nanophosphate
lithium-ion backup battery.
By participating in aviation’s evolutionary development, the changes it
has wrought in time have not affected
the company’s overall business, according to Bryan Miner, branch manager of MCIA’s California facility,
which is dedicated to overhaul and
repairs. “We still see a lot of analog
coming through the door,” he said,
but for a number of years that has not
included a lot of engine instruments.

He doesn’t expect that to change
much during the next several decades.
“There are still a lot of pilots who
prefer steam gauges,” Miner said, but
in the same breath he acknowledged
that their preference will retire with
them.
To keep pace with technology,
Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics continues to invest in research
and development. Digital systems
must still integrate with the airplane’s
mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical
systems and the humans responsible
for their operation, which calls for
switching and annunciator control
units.
Keeping pace is technology’s ultimate challenge for shops that maintain, repair or overhaul instruments
and avionics. What makes this especially vexing, according to Triumph’s
Vorsas, “is there is virtually nothing
on an airplane that is going unserved
right now.” Refocusing a shop’s capability and capacity depends on the
skill, knowledge and ambition possessed by the people who are the shop
and their ability to distinguish the
next opportunity, and to act on it. q
