fortunately, have the opportunity
to supply.
The time difference provides
some challenges. Unfortunately,
it can take 24 to 48 hours to get
answers from Spokane. Because
we pride ourselves in giving our
customers answers in the timeliest manner, this isn’t an ideal scenario. We have a great bunch of
people working in Spokane with a
vast range of knowledge throughout the company. We often use
their knowledge and experiences
when we don’t have the answer
ourselves. We are always learning something new from the gang
in Spokane about products and
systems. It would be really nice to
have that help during our business
hours.

What’s the condition of
aviation in Australia?
Is it thriving or facing
some of the problems
we’ve had in the U.S.?
Aviation has been up and down for
a few years now. I believe we do mirror the U.S. market. So when things
are booming there, we boom here.
And when things slow down, so do
we. I believe during 2013 and 2014 we
will all come out of this latest downturn and get back to happier days. It
may not be as good as it was, but it
certainly will be better than what we
have all experienced recently.

What’s a typical
day for you?
The great thing about aviation is
there is nothing typical about any
day, and you need to be able to
dance on your feet at any given time.
Going through emails first thing
in the morning is critical, especially
for customers who are waiting for
answers or quotes, as well as for all
new inquiries. Customer inquiries
take precedent over anything I have
planned for the day. So whether it’s
quoting, finding out product information or helping a customer plan for an
installation, that is my priority.
The rest of the day is spent helping
my staff or giving them product training. As a team, we also get together
to plan upcoming advertising, brochures, E-coupons and sales trips. I
always endeavor to call customers
whom we might not have heard from
in a while on a regular basis and see
if there is anything that I can help
them with.
Finally, I leave the best to last
– going through a wide range of
internal reports to see how we are
tracking, what products are or aren’t
selling, or to see if any patterns are
forming so that we can be proactive
rather than reactive.

What do you do when
you’re not working?
As much as EDMO is very important to me and a big part of my

life, family, friends and outside
interests are what I need to keep
balanced and to make sure I don’t
burn out or become complacent.
Weekends are my time to
unwind and get together with my
wife, Karyn, my son, Matt, and
friends. For many years, we have
what we call “Beer O’Clock” most
Saturday and Sunday evenings. We
get together to enjoy each other’s
company, fix the world’s problems
and be grateful and appreciate the
great life we have been given.
I have been a sports freak ever
since I was a kid, and Matt has followed in my footsteps. For many
years after I gave up playing cricket
and Aussie Rules football – that’s
the football where real men don’t
need to wear padding and helmets
– I took up coaching both kids and
adult teams. It was great watching
and coaching Matt, and we were
able to go through the highs and
lows together. At the end of the
2011 season, I decided to retire
and have more “me time.” Plus,
I’m getting too old and grumpy
to be on the football field in the
middle of winter with the rain and
cold. Well, that lasted one year. In
the last week, I was contacted and
coerced out of retirement, so here
we go again. q
