I

t is nearly impossible for an aviation enthusiast to hear a plane
fly over one’s head and not look up. Recently, Jenna Kramer,
Avionics News copy editor, spoke with Sandor Maracsko of
MM-Systems Ltd. to learn more about his journey as a pilot.
What is your favorite or most memorable moment as a pilot?

I will always remember three flights. The first is a definite dream
for most of us from the old continent. During a business trip to a
convention in Las Vegas, I applied for an FAA certificate issued on the
basis of my Hungarian license, then took off from North Las Vegas to
fly several corridors over the Grand Canyon to land at Grand Canyon
National Park Airport. Since the wind was very strong, my girlfriend
got a bit sick after a few minutes into the flight. But despite that, we
both had a once-in-a-lifetime experience and will never forget the
views. The second flight occurred when we spent a week in Van Nuys,
Calif. We rented a Cessna C172RG to do some local pattern work and
get checked out, then we flew over Venice Beach and LAX to Catalina
Island, then to San Diego. The third flight was the return flight to Van
Nuys, Calif., from San Diego. The flexibility and the professionalism
of SOCAL Approach really amazed me on the night flight through the
dense traffic over downtown Los Angeles, where views were almost
suppressed by the red beacon lights of all of the aircrafts around us.
How long have you been flying?

I learned gliding in 1999, which was still more of a sport or a kind
of social event. It required a tremendous amount of free time at the
airport, which I did not have back then. After a few months of trying,
