was in the early 1960s, long before we had the security we
have today. We would come home smelling like kerosene
that permeated our clothes, so my mother knew right away
where we’d been. I still can’t help but look up every time a
plane passes overhead.
So you’re that airport kid we always hear about?
Yes. In fact, I think my sister and I were the reason they
put up the fences around that airfield. At an early age, I knew
I was going to fly. When I was in the Navy, I was stationed
in Puerto Rico and traded scuba diving lessons for flying lessons. That’s the kind of thing you did when you were broke
but had a dream. I always loved electronics in school. But in
the Navy, I was in the Seabees in the Construction Electrician
field usually surrounded by electronics technicians. My job
was to maintain the generator and antenna sites on the base.
I started taking advanced classes in electronics while I was
still in the service, as well as my college preliminary classes.
When I got out, I finished my private pilot’s license and
then added my commercial, as well. I used the GI Bill for
flight training, then went back to school and earned a de-

gree in electronics design. I flew for Omaha Airplane Supply
as a sales rep for a couple of years; it was associated with Sky
Harbor, so we had multiple aircraft to choose from depending upon what was required. They had a Cessna 182, 206,
210, 310, 421 and an Aero Commander. It was a great time to
build up some flying hours. I also worked part time in the avionics shop, where I eventually became the avionics manager.
When did you join Duncan Aviation?
In 1985. Duncan Aviation contacted me to see if I would be
interested in setting up their newly envisioned satellite shops.
They wanted someone to write the repair station manuals
and hire people for various positions. After setting up shops
in the Houston and Cleveland areas, I went into Duncan Aviation’s technical support side, handling phone calls from operators and working with them to diagnose problems with
their radars, navs, comms and autopilots – any avionics question about an airplane that was broken. We’d determine the
problem and, if necessary, send them a loaner, and they
