“I think so many radars that are termed ‘digital’ probably
have more analog elements to them than they do digital. It
kind of depends on what part of ‘digital’ you are talking
about.”
Stone said that first-generation radars used an analog
magnetron to transmit the energy pulses, then an analog
logarithmic amplifier would collect the pulses that
returned and send them directly to the radar display.
Second-generation digital units used the same
magnetron along with a majority of the earlier
system’s analog parts. The big difference was their
ability to use an ARINC high-speed data bus to take
those signals to the display unit.
“With digital technology, the signal is sampled
and turned into a digital representation that can be
stored in memory,” said Roy Robertson, principal
systems engineer for surveillance/radar systems at
Rockwell Collins. “We can also implement digital
signal processing capabilities to extract a lot more
information, and you can do a lot more with that
information than you could in the past.”
Some of those differences were the introduction of
color displays (there’s more to it than just having a
color CRT), early signal attenuation displays, digital
checklists and other capabilities.
“Now if you look at a modern radar (like Garmin’s
new GWX 70), they have become much more digital
in nature throughout the device itself,” Stone said.
