“Airborne weather radar is a
tactical, real-time tool,” Stone said.
“Satellite information is much more
strategic in nature. You don’t want to
go penetrating a storm on information
that may be 10, or more, minutes old.
Things happen way too fast.”
Weather Around the World
One big advantage satellite-based
systems have over airborne systems
is the ability to display weather on
anything from a panel-mounted
multifunction display to an iPhone,
so pilots can have some level of
avoidance help in any aircraft.
Anything is better than nothing.
The drawback has been that once

you get out of the satellite coverage
area, you are left with nothing but
what air traffic control can share
with you. Unfortunately, it’s often
not as good as you might hope.
Garmin’s recently introduced
GSR 56 is a major step in
improving weather information
availability around the world.
Stone explained that the system
works with the G500, G600 and
G1000, and the GTN650 and
GTN750 as long as it has the
Iridium antenna and service.
“It’s a big planet, and the need
for weather information exists
worldwide,” Stone explained.
“The GSR 56 uses an Iridium

transceiver that gives global
coverage. Currently, we are
collecting and aggregating weather
feed information from stations
across Europe, Australia, South
America and other parts of the
world.”
Stone said the actual weather
content varies by country
depending on what information
they have available. Not all
weather data is created equal.
“It’s most definitely available to
all types of GA aircraft operating
anywhere in the world,” he said.
“It adds a bit of confidence and
coverage once you cross the XM
coverage border.” q
